A Marble Machine is a creative ball-run contraption, made from familiar materials, designed to send a rolling marble through tubes and funnels, across tracks and bumpers, and into a catch at the end! Sure, Marble Runs are a ton of fun to make and to use, but they also make great engineering challenges for kids! They can be a fantastic tool for teaching children how to work collaboratively with their classmates and peers.  They also allow children to explore problem solving in a fun and interactive way.Location:  Mattera Cabin, 1481 Main Street, Reading

This 12-week program is recreational pick-up basketball for men ages 18+ and will be overseen by Friends of Reading Recreation volunteer, Jack Malley.  All abilities are welcome.
 
10:30 AM - 11:30 AM    Sunday Basketball Jr. Clinic (Grades K-1) - Sunday Basketball Jr. Clinic - Session I

All teams will be capped at 12 players or less (space is limited).  The Sunday League rules dictate the exact amount of playing time each individual receives. Playing time is based on the number of players per team.  We will be holding a mandatory coaches meeting prior to the start of the season. SPACE IS LIMITED... This program is open to all middle school basketball players regardless of whether they are playing in any other basketball program. Players will be divided into teams and volunteer coaches will coach this league. Ninja Warrior is a blend of fitness, flexibility, strength, skill, and of course, fun! Throughout class, participants will engage in various drills, elements, games, and obstacle courses. From scaling up cargo nets on a truss to walking across balance beams, climbing over the A-frame to hanging on monkey bars, this class allows participants to have fun while progressing through various elements… for the love of play.
 
6:15 PM - 7:15 PM    Fencing, Youth Programs (Ages 7-18) - Youth Fencing - Session 3 (Beginner/Intermediate)
For a fun and healthy competitive sport that offers a workout for both mind and body, you can try fencing.  Fencing offers many health benefits including increased flexibility, leg strength and endurance, and improved coordination.  Additionally, because fencing requires you to learn how to predict and outwit your opponent, it is a sport that can greatly improve your concentration, reflexes and ability to notice small details.  Children and teens alike who are interested in the sport can learn fencing with the New England Fencing Alliance.   About the Instructor: Michael Tarascio was a member of the United States World Championship Team in Men’s Foil. Michael is a Level 4 Foil coach certified through the United States Fencing Association. Also, certified through the Positive Coaching Alliance and the American Sports Education Program. He teaches Recreational Classes for Youth, Teens, and Adults. Also, Michael teaches Advanced Level Technique and Tactics Classes and provides Individual Coaching for the Serious Competitive Fencer. Pickleball is not only fun but is great exercise too. Pickleball combines many elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis (ping pong).  Beginners will learn fundamentals and strategies of the game as well as player health and safety.  Beginners will concentrate on the rules, regulations, and etiquette of pickleball.  Pickleball can be played as singles or doubles, and games will be of the non-competitive nature. THE BEGINNER CLASS IS FOR BEGINNERS ONLY!  PLEASE DO NOT REGISTER FOR THIS UNLESS YOU ARE A BEGINNER.INTERMEDIATE:  Mid-level players looking to improve their shot selection, game strategy, and reduce unforced errors.  Intermediate players will have the chance for competitive games.  Players will focus on more advanced skills and strategies for single and doubles matches.  Players will have experienced skills including; forehand, backhand, serve/ return, and know the fundamental rules and can keep score.   Basic knowledge of court position and situations where it can be effective.Instructor:  Jack Drinkwater

Calling all chefs! Join us for a skill-based culinary program designed for young chefs to chop, mix, swirl and cook their way to a new culinary masterpiece each week. With a focus on exciting culinary techniques, fresh flavors, and activities paired with expert instruction, this class delivers the perfect recipe for hands-on learning and fun while nurturing an essential life skill. Learn about kitchen and food safety, knife skills, measuring and mixing methods, ingredient identification, independence in the kitchen and more. We cook with flour, eggs, and dairy in this class but use all nut free ingredients. Class includes a cloth apron, a cooking journal and sample of the recipe for the family to try. The RIVAL series is designed with Nerfer’s in Grades 6-8 as it features high-performance, high-speed Nerf blasters that are perfect for competitive, team-based play. If you have ever wanted to try out Paintball, this is a great, safe alternative! The RIVAL blasters use squishy Nerf pellets, which are perfect for competitive gaming because players can feel when they get hit, but the pellets don’t hurt like Paintball.  This awesome program puts a fresh spin on traditional games like Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, and Zone Wars, while also allowing participants to get great exercise, learn strategic planning skills, and make new battle-tested friends.Participants will play different games, with individual and team-based challenges, so there is always something new and exciting to strive for. We will also have all sorts of obstacles for the students to interact with, so they never know what to expect! Ninja Warrior is a blend of fitness, flexibility, strength, skill, and of course, fun! Throughout class, participants will engage in various drills, elements, games, and obstacle courses. From scaling up cargo nets on a truss to walking across balance beams, climbing over the A-frame to hanging on monkey bars, this class allows participants to have fun while progressing through various elements… for the love of play.

For a fun and healthy competitive sport that offers a workout for both mind and body, you can try fencing.  Fencing offers many health benefits including increased flexibility, leg strength and endurance, and improved coordination.  Additionally, because fencing requires you to learn how to predict and outwit your opponent, it is a sport that can greatly improve your concentration, reflexes and ability to notice small details.  Children and teens alike who are interested in the sport can learn fencing with the New England Fencing Alliance.   About the Instructor: Michael Tarascio was a member of the United States World Championship Team in Men’s Foil. Michael is a Level 4 Foil coach certified through the United States Fencing Association. Also, certified through the Positive Coaching Alliance and the American Sports Education Program. He teaches Recreational Classes for Youth, Teens, and Adults. Also, Michael teaches Advanced Level Technique and Tactics Classes and provides Individual Coaching for the Serious Competitive Fencer. Learn about kitchen and food safety, knife skills, measuring and mixing methods, ingredient identification, independence in the kitchen and more. We cook with flour, eggs, and dairy in this class but use all nut free ingredients. Class includes a cloth apron, a cooking journal and sample of the recipe for the family to try. The RIVAL blasters use squishy Nerf pellets, which are perfect for competitive gaming because players can feel when they get hit, but the pellets don’t hurt like Paintball.  This awesome program puts a fresh spin on traditional games like Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, and Zone Wars, while also allowing participants to get great exercise, learn strategic planning skills, and make new battle-tested friends.Participants will play different games, with individual and team-based challenges, so there is always something new and exciting to strive for. For a fun and healthy competitive sport that offers a workout for both mind and body, you can try fencing.  Fencing offers many health benefits including increased flexibility, leg strength and endurance, and improved coordination.  Additionally, because fencing requires you to learn how to predict and outwit your opponent, it is a sport that can greatly improve your concentration, reflexes and ability to notice small details.  Children and teens alike who are interested in the sport can learn fencing with the New England Fencing Alliance.   About the Instructor: Michael Tarascio was a member of the United States World Championship Team in Men’s Foil. Michael is a Level 4 Foil coach certified through the United States Fencing Association. Also, certified through the Positive Coaching Alliance and the American Sports Education Program. He teaches Recreational Classes for Youth, Teens, and Adults. Also, Michael teaches Advanced Level Technique and Tactics Classes and provides Individual Coaching for the Serious Competitive Fencer. 7:45 PM - 9:00 PM    Pickleball, Adult Program (Relaxed, Casual & Challenging Play) - Pickleball (Challenging Recreation Play): Session I
Try out the fastest growing sport around!  Similar to ping pong, badminton, and tennis, it’s a fun, active game that can be mastered by anyone, from youth to senior citizens. This program is for adults, ages 18 and older. Pickleball was created during the summer of 1965 and is currently the fastest growing sport in the United States. It is played on a badminton court with the net lowered to 34 inches, and uses a perforated plastic ball (similar to a whiffle ball) and wood or composite paddles.  PLEASE NOTE:  You must have prior pickleball experience to register for these sessions.  If you have never played pickleball and would like to learn, we are offering instructional beginner and intermediate pickleball session starting January 24th.

Calling all chefs! Join us for a skill-based culinary program designed for young chefs to chop, mix, swirl and cook their way to a new culinary masterpiece each week. With a focus on exciting culinary techniques, fresh flavors, and activities paired with expert instruction, this class delivers the perfect recipe for hands-on learning and fun while nurturing an essential life skill. Learn about kitchen and food safety, knife skills, measuring and mixing methods, ingredient identification, independence in the kitchen and more. We cook with flour, eggs, and dairy in this class but use all nut free ingredients. Class includes a cloth apron, a cooking journal and sample of the recipe for the family to try. The RIVAL series is designed with Nerfer’s in Grades 6-8 as it features high-performance, high-speed Nerf blasters that are perfect for competitive, team-based play. If you have ever wanted to try out Paintball, this is a great, safe alternative! The RIVAL blasters use squishy Nerf pellets, which are perfect for competitive gaming because players can feel when they get hit, but the pellets don’t hurt like Paintball.  This awesome program puts a fresh spin on traditional games like Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, and Zone Wars, while also allowing participants to get great exercise, learn strategic planning skills, and make new battle-tested friends.Participants will play different games, with individual and team-based challenges, so there is always something new and exciting to strive for. We will also have all sorts of obstacles for the students to interact with, so they never know what to expect! Sure, Marble Runs are a ton of fun to make and to use, but they also make great engineering challenges for kids! BEGINNER: Welcome to the fastest growing sport in America.  Pickleball is a game for all ages and skill levels. Pickleball is not only fun but is great exercise too. Pickleball combines many elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis (ping pong).  Beginners will learn fundamentals and strategies of the game as well as player health and safety.  Beginners will concentrate on the rules, regulations, and etiquette of pickleball.  Pickleball can be played as singles or doubles, and games will be of the non-competitive nature. THE BEGINNER CLASS IS FOR BEGINNERS ONLY!  PLEASE DO NOT REGISTER FOR THIS UNLESS YOU ARE A BEGINNER.INTERMEDIATE:  Mid-level players looking to improve their shot selection, game strategy, and reduce unforced errors.  Intermediate players will have the chance for competitive games.  Players will focus on more advanced skills and strategies for single and doubles matches.  Players will have experienced skills including; forehand, backhand, serve/ return, and know the fundamental rules and can keep score.   Basic knowledge of court position and situations where it can be effective.Instructor:  Jack Drinkwater

We will be holding Sunday Pickleball pick-up games starting January 23rd through March 27th at the Coolidge Middle School Gymnasium (excluding February 20th which is school vacation).  4:00PM-6:00PM - Relaxed, Casual, Fun & Friendly Play6:00PM-8:00PM - Challenging Recreation PlayThese Sunday pick-up games will be available for registration on the Monday prior to each Sunday.There will be no refund checks issued if you or the Recreation Division need to cancel Pickleball Pick-Up on Sundays!  We will only offer a credit to your Reading Recreation account to be used on future Reading Recreation programs.PLEASE NOTE:  You must have prior pickleball experience to register for these sessions.  If you have never played pickleball and would like to learn, we are offering instructional beginner pickleball lessons starting January 24th.  DUE TO THE POPULARITY OF THESE PICKLEBALL PICK-UP SESSIONS ON SUNDAYS, PLEASE REGISTER FOR ONLY ONE SESSION EACH WEEK IN ORDER TO GIVE AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY!

6:15 PM - 7:15 PM    Fencing, Youth Programs (Ages 7-18) - Youth Fencing - Session 3 (Beginner/Intermediate)
For a fun and healthy competitive sport that offers a workout for both mind and body, you can try fencing.  Fencing offers many health benefits including increased flexibility, leg strength and endurance, and improved coordination.  Additionally, because fencing requires you to learn how to predict and outwit your opponent, it is a sport that can greatly improve your concentration, reflexes and ability to notice small details.  Children and teens alike who are interested in the sport can learn fencing with the New England Fencing Alliance.   About the Instructor: Michael Tarascio was a member of the United States World Championship Team in Men’s Foil. Michael is a Level 4 Foil coach certified through the United States Fencing Association. Also, certified through the Positive Coaching Alliance and the American Sports Education Program. He teaches Recreational Classes for Youth, Teens, and Adults. Also, Michael teaches Advanced Level Technique and Tactics Classes and provides Individual Coaching for the Serious Competitive Fencer. 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM    Pickleball Lessons, Adult Program (Beginner and Intermediate) - Beginner Pickleball
BEGINNER: Welcome to the fastest growing sport in America.  Pickleball is a game for all ages and skill levels. Pickleball is not only fun but is great exercise too. Pickleball combines many elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis (ping pong).  Beginners will learn fundamentals and strategies of the game as well as player health and safety.  Beginners will concentrate on the rules, regulations, and etiquette of pickleball.  Pickleball can be played as singles or doubles, and games will be of the non-competitive nature. THE BEGINNER CLASS IS FOR BEGINNERS ONLY!  PLEASE DO NOT REGISTER FOR THIS UNLESS YOU ARE A BEGINNER.INTERMEDIATE:  Mid-level players looking to improve their shot selection, game strategy, and reduce unforced errors.  Intermediate players will have the chance for competitive games.  Players will focus on more advanced skills and strategies for single and doubles matches.  Players will have experienced skills including; forehand, backhand, serve/ return, and know the fundamental rules and can keep score.   Basic knowledge of court position and situations where it can be effective.Instructor:  Jack Drinkwater
