First Step Speed is a 6-week speed training program for boys and girls in grades 3–5, designed to teach young athletes the proper way to run while building strength, coordination, and confidence. Sessions are held on the indoor turf at All Sports Center (55 Concord St., North Reading, MA) and follow a fun, structured format that combines sprint mechanics coaching (posture, arm action, knee drive, and foot strike) with age-appropriate drills and power-building foundations.
Each class is built around quality movement and safe progression—short reps, full rest, and lots of coaching—so athletes learn skills they can use in any sport. The program also includes a mentorship element: in addition to Coach Ryan and an assistant coach, select older athletes help demonstrate drills and encourage the group, creating a positive, confidence-building environment.
About Coach Ryan:
Coach Ryan Scottron grew up as a multi-sport athlete, playing football, baseball, and basketball. He attended Boston College High School and played Division I football at the University of New Hampshire.
Ryan didn't receive formal speed and performance coaching until midway through high school, and that experience shaped the way he coaches today: teach kids the right fundamentals early, so they don't have to "figure it out later."
After college, he spent the next 10 years coaching boxing and Muay Thai, developing a coaching style built on discipline, technique, confidence, and doing things the right way.
