Chess
After you know the basics of chess - how to set up the chess pieces, and how the pieces move, you need to do two things to get to the next level.  One is to play a lot, and the other is to study the game.  In our course, we will make sure you can do both each week.  The lesson time will be set up to cover a different aspect of the game every week or two.   For example, we will work on tactical problems for a while (e.g. mates, pins, forks, skewers, etc.) before moving on to cover a different area of the game such as endgame strategy.  The lessons will be based first and foremost around problem solving.  Problem solving is the best way to study as this is the main skill you need as a chess player.  Some of the other areas we will cover during the course are opening principles of the game, middlegame planning, and positional play.

Due to our small group sizes, we offer a personalized learning experience for the kids! Naturally the lessons will also be based on the strengths and weakness of the individual students in the group.  Learning the skill of self-analysis is necessary for all chess players.  Therefore, we will not only study illustrative games that come from masters and experienced tournament players, but also the games the students are playing each week against each other.  Students will learn about notation for reading (and writing) games, so that they will be prepared to enter tournaments (where you are required to record your games).

P.S: We are proud to say that our classes are taught by USCF Expert and Class A rated coaches with more than 20 years of experience in teaching and playing competitive chess!

PLEASE NOTE:  This program will run during February vacation.
